A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 24, Beatles, U2, Aerosmith Songs

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Once upon a time, or maybe twice, there was an unearthly paradise called “Picking-Favoritesland”.

(If you get that reference, we are automatically best friends.)

Welcome to your weekly recap of the Picking Favorites podcast!  This week, He of Seventeen Names (we’ll go with ‘Murica this time around) and Razzle gave us a very music-centric episode that is sure to please your eardrums and enlighten your soul.  Or, y’know, you’ll enjoy it.

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

David Hodges! (@hodgesmusic)

David is a Grammy-winning songwriter, singer, keyboardist, producer, and all-around musical bad-ass.  He was also one of the founding members of the band Evanescence!  Some of his songs that you may recognize are below, but you can also find more of his work on his website.

“Bring Me To Life”, Evanescence (co-written by David, he was also the keyboardist and co-writer for their first album, “Fallen”)

“Because of You”, Kelly Clarkson (co-written by David)

Christina Perri, “The Words” (co-written by David)

Favorite Beatles Song

This topic is problematic, because I’ve been a Beatles fan for as long as I can remember (Yellow Submarine was my first favorite movie ever) and now I will be annoying everyone around me singing these songs for the rest of the day.  THANKS, GUYS.

“A Day In The Life”

“Let It Be”

Extra Mentions:

“Eleanor Rigby”

“Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”

Michael Anthony, bassist from Van Halen

“Hey Jude” Cover

“Stay With Me” vs. “Won’t Back Down” Lawsuit

“Blurred Lines” vs. “Got To Give It Up” Lawsuit

SNL, Five Beatles Sketch w/ Jon Lovitz

Favorite U2 Song

Back in the day, before Apple forced U2 into our devices like a parent making you eat your vegetables, I think everyone had some form of appreciation for at least ONE of U2’s songs.  So maybe, once our fierce indignation over our playlists has subsided, we can love them again.  Also, HOW. IN THE WORLD. IS “PRIDE”. NOT ON THIS LIST?!

“Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”

“Running To Stand Still”

Extra Mention

“Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” (Rattle and Hum Version)

Rattle and Hum documentary

Favorite Aerosmith Song

SUPER SPEED ROUND!  I’m glad this topic was included though, because Steven Tyler’s voice is SO FREAKIN’ COOL.  And come on, Aerosmith has their own roller-coaster (and seriously, hearing “Love In An Elevator” while you’re going from 0 to 60 mph in like 2 seconds is pretty effing awesome).  Who else can say that?

“Janie’s Got a Gun”

“Walk This Way”

“Dream On”

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • This week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… RAZZLE! First of all, he gets it for Periscoping the podcast, since I know lots of us were curious what the room looked like and stuff.  But also, he wins for the awful “dead nun/Baby Got Back” joke and because he totally deserves it for missing out on hanging out with Paul McCartney. Ouch.  Sorry, sir.  Oh, and for turning “Voltron” into a verb, because why not?
  • This is totally not what’s happening, but I have this vision in my head of like, Zac and Tyler being like, “Okay, guys, we gotta go film stuff! See you later!” And ‘Murica just turns to Razzle and is like, “INVITE ALL THE DAVIDS”. **UPDATE** Picking Favorites fan @principia graciously created this meme for us. Thanks, Prin!

  • I had no idea about “Walk This Way” being about Young Frankenstein, and that is the best thing I’ve heard in a long time.
  • Since David mentioned it, I used to live in Nashville.  There is nowhere else in the world that you will feel MORE musically untalented, no matter what your skill level is.  Because at least 27 people are better than you.  It’s crazy.
  • This is SUPER random, but the only thing I’ve ever seen from the show “Glee” is when Neil Patrick Harris sang “Dream On” with Matthew Morrison and KILLED IT.  In the good way.  I mean, I’m sure rock fans weren’t happy about it because it was “Glee”, but check it out- you can’t deny that NPH’S voice is RIDICULOUS.
  • Why yes, I DID creep on Razzle’s Instagram and therefore see that ‘Murica came through on his promise to make a shirt for Razzle:

Did ‘Murica make Razzle a pink “Michael Keaton” halter top? An homage to “Mr Mom”, perhaps?
It isn’t often I’m glad I don’t get to participate in a “Picking Favorites” podcast, but this would be one of them. Trying to pick a favorite Beatles song would be similar in trying to pick my favorite $100 bill. It would send my brain into an unrecoverable loop, the podcast would grind to a halt because I would have to state my complete analysis of every song that popped in my head (and I know THEM ALL!), and I would get kicked out of the room and be hated by everyone. Favorite album might – MIGHT – be doable, but favorite song would not end well.
