A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 20, TV Buddy Chick Flick

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome back, PF fans! Whether you’re hungover from St. Patrick’s Day or still understandably creeped out by the ending of “The Jinx”, I’m here to get you through this week’s episode in a calm and quiet fashion.  Well, maybe not calm- I am a raging fangirl, after all.

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes and Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Yvette Nicole Brown! (@ynb)

You probably know Yvette best as Shirley Bennett from the beloved “Community”, but if you’re a bit younger, you might know her better as Helen from “Drake and Josh”! Although she had to leave “Community” for personal reasons (and we’re all totally going to miss Shirley, because she was awesome with her thinly-veiled rage issues), you can now see her as Dani, Oscar Madison’s assistant, on “The Odd Couple” on CBS.

You can catch “The Odd Couple” on Thursday nights at 8:30PM, or here!

Now, onto to the topics!

Favorite Chick Flick

I’m really hoping, with the success of Bridesmaids,  remake, that we’re about to see an overall improvement in chick flicks, because ladies? The Nicholas Sparks stuff that has come to represent this genre is just NOT doing it for me, okay?  Let’s get more sisters doin’ it for themselves, you know what I mean? Come on now.  TV has this stuff DOWN.  That all being said, I am totally on board with everyone’s choices here, particularly Zac’s.

While You Were Sleeping

Mean Girls

A League of Their Own

Extra Mention:

When Harry Met Sally

Thelma and Louise

Favorite Buddy Movie

For how much our boys like to reminisce about the 80s, I was pretty surprised that, y’know, Lethal Weapon or Planes, Trains, and Automobiles didn’t make the cut, but these are some SOLID choices.  Aannnddd now “The Entertainer” is gonna be stuck in my head all day which will make me want ice cream because that’s the song my neighborhood ice cream truck played when I was little. Sigh.

Yvette and David:

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Sting

Dumb & Dumber

Extra Mentions:

Spies Like Us

Favorite Current TV Show

We are in the midst of a television renaissance, folks.  There is SO MUCH good stuff on cable, streaming sites, or even network TV right now that I don’t know how any of us find the time to catch it all.  Thankfully, we have the ability to binge-watch now, but remember to stay hydrated and take breaks for sleep and social interaction every so often, okay? And maybe take it easy on those cheese puffs.

“The Walking Dead”

“The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”

“Peaky Blinders”

“The Flash”

Extra Mentions:

“The Jinx”

“Agent Carter”

“House of Cards”

“Downton Abbey”

“The Last Man on Earth”

Sara Chase (currently playing Cyndee Pokorny on “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and was in “First Date” on Broadway with Zac)

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • This week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… YVETTE NICOLE BROWN! For so many reasons, too.  I loved her whole conversation about the reactions to her leaving “Community”, and her honesty about it all, too (PS: Can everyone just, you know, be NICE on the internet?).  I loved her dream of having Brad Pitt and Matthew McConaughey in chaps in the “Butch Cassidy” remake.  I loved her appreciation and proud advocacy of live-tweeting (I am right there with you, ma’am).  But most of all, I loved the fact that, not only did she hold her own with our boys, but she COMMANDEERED the ship throughout the whole episode: making the rules of “chick flicks”, settling amusement park feuds, throwing things off to Zac, and basically just being awesome.  Bravo!
  • Do you guys agree with Yvette’s assessment of Razzle?  See below:

  • Color me shocked that the elder Geena Davis in A League of Their Own wasn’t just Geena Davis with elderly make-up! Uh, give that casting person a raise (… twenty years ago).
  • Does anyone else find it endlessly entertaining that Razzle, who declared his undying love for cereal (preferably in a pimp cup) just a couple of weeks ago, is being compared to Ryan Gosling, who refuses to eat it?
  • I am also of the opinion that everyone should check out “The Last Man on Earth” on Fox.  If it’s not enough that it’s a really funny and different show, I also urge you to watch JUST to check out Will Forte’s magnificent legs.  Rawr.

Either I’m getting indoctrinated, or these podcasts are getting better and better. Loved this one! And Zac gets the “Making Zac Squirm Award” for saying “going down the Taylor Swift hole.” BWAHAHAHA!
YAY for Zac pointing out “Peaky Blinders”!! That show is AWESOME!!!!! I already blasted through both seasons in like 3 days (patiently waiting for third season). And YAY for bringing up “Agent Carter” and “The Flash”!
I’m curious, however, why do shows decided to shoot one-camera as opposed to multi-camera? Is it cinematically better? It seems like a giant waste of time and pain in the ass…
Thanks, Shannon, for another great podcast!
