A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 2, Cranking the Dish

By: Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to another recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast! Every week, I’ll be breaking down the topics and favorites mentioned on the show and throwing in some random commentary along the way. Sometimes really random. Sorry.

As usual, you can find this week’s podcast on Soundcloud and iTunes.

This Week’s Guest:

Adam Baldwin

Adam is best known for his roles on “Firefly” as Jayne Cobb and “Chuck” as John Casey, and is currently starring in the TBS series “The Last Ship”. Basically, he’s a bad motherSHUT YO’ MOUTH.

(Note: Adam Baldwin is not Shaft.)

Also, from here on out, per Zac’s request, David Coleman will be referred to as “Kentucky”. Although I must say, as a person who used to live in Tennessee, his lack of accent is confusing to me. The true test is if he calls a winter hat a toboggan, because people in Tennessee do, and I’m sorry, Tennesseans, but a toboggan is a SLED. Leave the winter terminology to people who actually EXPERIENCE winter. *microphone drop *

The guys began this week’s podcast with some thank you’s, a discussion about bourbon and pizza, and a brief description of Adam’s current project, “The Last Ship”.  Then we hopped right into this week’s topics!

Topic #1: Favorite Mel Brooks Movie

Okay, first things first: if you haven’t seen ANY of the movies mentioned below, GO SEE THEM IMMEDIATELY, WHAT’S THE MATTER WITH YOU?!  There is nothing that makes me laugh harder than the “Puttin’ On the Ritz” scene from Young Frankenstein.  We’re treated to quite a few quotes, impressions, and even a song from Adam during this segment.  Aahh, they just don’t make ’em like this anymore, folks. (Side note: It wasn’t mentioned by the guys- well, very briefly by Zac- but I quote Robin Hood: Men in Tights on a pretty much daily basis. Ooohh, Robin, I’m soooo HAPPY!)

High Anxiety

Young Frankenstein

Blazing Saddles

Young Frankenstein (Since it was already mentioned, I figured I’d add the “Puttin’ on the Ritz” scene because it is comedy gold.)

… and Spaceballs

Spaceballs (Again, since this was already mentioned, I give you the “Combing the Desert” scene)

Topic #2: Favorite Guilty Pleasure Movie

It’s hard, when you’re as unrelenting of a dork as I am, to really feel that guilty about any of your choices because there’s just TOO MUCH dorkness going on in general.  Regardless, there are some movies that are perceived as either “less than good” or so unrepresentative of our tastes that we try to keep our love for them on the DL.  Well, I say pish-tosh to that, nerds: let your unconventional love for Battlefield Earth shine!  That being said, I have never heard of Ice Pirates in my life (and have asked multiple people about it and gotten ONLY blank stares), so I think I doubt its existence… even though I’ve included the trailer below.

You’ve Got Mail

Batman and Robin

The Ice Pirates

Pitch Perfect

The Devil Wears Prada

Topic #3: Favorite 80’s Band

This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart, since 80’s music has an almost-supernatural hold on it.  I love 80’s music.  If you put 80’s music on, I will gleefully sing and dance along and ignore the looks of horror around me at my significant lack of mad skillz, yo.  Basically, this topic made me really happy.

Bon Jovi

Duran Duran

Depeche Mode

The Police

Dire Straits

Huey Lewis and The News

Extra Mentions:

Van Halen

And finally, ladies and gentlemen, I give you the song that Tyler apparently lost his virginity to: “Spare-Ass Annie” by William S. Burroughs and The Disposable Heroes of HipHoprisy

Random Notes From Shannon’s Brain

  • I am not touching the “GamerGate” stuff with a MILE-LONG POLE.
  • Last week’s Winner of the “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award was Razzle, due to our similar opinions about Disney cartoons.  This week?  Kentucky almost grabbed it for choosing Bon Jovi alone (I was born and bred in the Dirty Jerz), but it was Tyler who came out on top, thanks to his comments about Evan Peter’s incredible acting on “American Horror Story” (SO MUCH YES) and… okay, I’ll be honest, he won this week the minute I listened to the song he lost his virginity to.  I AM IN AWE.
  • The guys, while discussing Young Frankenstein, make a point of saying that Razzle looks like Marty Feldman.  Guys.  GUYS:

  • Fangirl Moment of the Week: Adam calls Zac “Zacky” at one point, and my heart grew three sizes.  Listen, I’m a “Chuck” fan- any sign of affection between those two is going to give me MAJOR Chuck and Casey feels.  Shut up, don’t look at me.
  • Meryl Streep is queen. That is all.
  • While he didn’t win the “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award, Zac gets bonus points for pointing out that there should be NO guilt for dudes having an affinity for romantic comedies.  Rom-com’s for all!

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and tweet YOUR favorites with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites” to @thenerdmachine!  You can also join in on the conversation in the comments below.  Thanks for reading! I’ll see you next week- same nerd time, same nerd channel!

I LOVE YOU SHANNON FOX!!!!!! (Ok just had to get my nerd sista love out of the way….ahem) Just wanna throw in my 2 cents and say that my favorite Mel Brooks movie is Spaceballs, admittedly mostly due to my intense Star Wars nerdery. Soooo many classic lines! Young Frankenstein (and yes, I did pronounce it “Frawnkenshteen” in my head as I typed it) comes in at a very close second for me. It’s one of my parents’ favorites and is quoted often in our family. Great review, my lovely Fox❤️

Foxy, you knocked it out of the park! (insert other baseball metaphors about how great you are here)

I gotta say though, the lack of The Talking Heads in the 80s music discussion…? Sorry, boys. But you missed gold. GOLD, I TELL YOU. The Talking Heads! Oh and Prince. Always Prince. Every day Prince. Like it’s 1999.

I think my favorite part, Foxy, is how you mic dropped Tennesseeans? (Tennesseeyans? Tennesseens? I like that last one. People from Tennessee are now Tennesseens.) …about weather of all things. As a girl boyyyn and raised in the SoCal kind-of-desert…what is weather anyways? I don’t know. Anything but sun confuses me and makes me happy because NEW THINGS.

That being said, Zac mentioning “Ice Pirates” made me scream. I didn’t know people knew about Ice Pirates. I thought I was the only one on the planet besides the people who were IN THE ACTUAL MOVIE. I wanted to be Anjelica Huston in that movie. Mostly her resting bitch face and that outfit. Just priceless. I want to watch Ice Pirates now.

In conclusion, Foxy, these are great! And I can’t wait for more of the podcast! Wednesdays are great days! Good job, gentlemen!!! Can’t wait to hear who your next guest is!
