A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 18, Cereal Video Heartthrob

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast!  But more importantly, where is the Micro Machines guy when you need him, because our guys were on a time-crunch this week and had to lightning-round through the topics and choices like their butts were on fire.  We still got ourselves a great episode from it, though, and an extra bonus: a female guest!  WHO RUN THE WORLD?

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:
Busy Philipps! (@busyphilipps25)

Busy is a cereal-lovin’ actress that you may know from shows like “Freaks and Geeks”, “Dawson’s Creek”, and, currently, “Cougar Town”.  She is also one of the WorkJuice Players in the “Thrilling Adventure Hour” shows and podcast, a stage show that’s kind of like an old-timey radio show. Check it out here!  And keep an eye out for Busy’s new series, “Vice Principals”, coming to HBO soon!

“Cougar Town”, Tuesday nights on TBS

Favorite Heart-Throb

I have fond memories of plastering pictures of my crushes all over my walls as a pre-teen/teenager…. and my mom yelling at me for printing out pictures from the newly popular internet (that took fifteen minutes to load on our dial-up connection) and “wasting the ink”. Stop trying to smother my teenage hormones, Ma!  Also, there is a BIZARRE lack of boyband members from these choices, am I right?

Leonardo Dicaprio

Juliette Lewis

Leif Garrett

Alyssa Milano

Phoebe Cates

Extra Mentions:

Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet

Scott Baio

Jonathan Taylor Thomas

The Fonz

Claire Danes

Nicole Eggert

Winnie Cooper

Anjelica Huston

Helen Mirren

Favorite Music Video

Once upon a time before YouTube, children, MTV used to actually play music videos on their channel!  They even used to have ENTIRE shows dedicated to doing just that, and people used to WATCH them.  Isn’t that crazy?  Those were the days… also, we all used to walk SEVEN MILES TO SCHOOL IN BLIZZARDS AND HURRICANES AND THINGS.  SERIOUSLY.

“Cryin'”- Aerosmith

“Hurt”- Johnny Cash

“Sledgehammer”- Peter Gabriel

“Weapon of Choice”- Fatboy Slim

“Everlong”- Foo Fighters

Extra Mentions:

“You Can Call Me Al”- Paul Simon

“Basket Case”- Green Day

“Fat”- Weird Al

“Here It Goes Again”- OK Go

Favorite Cereal

Did you know that toys and/or prizes in cereal boxes are basically extinct?  How upsetting is that?? Like, apparently, it’s for safety reason, but you know what? We all grew up accidentally ingesting cheap plastic toys and turned out just FINE, thank you very much.  Fine, we’ll all just gorge ourselves on the massive amounts of sugar in the choices mentioned and that will TOTALLY be healthier, right? Right.

Honey Nut Cheerios

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Honey Bunches of Oats

???? He listed, like, FIFTY.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch

Honey Nut Cheerios Raisin Bran?

Extra Mention:

Cap’n Crunch

“Colon Blow” Skit on “Saturday Night Live”

Cookie Crisp

Team Cereal

Malt O’ Meal Commercials

Kashi Cereals

Cereal bowl with straw

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… Razzle! Because he apparently eats cereal out of a pimp cup.  That is the most ridiculously amazing thing I’ve ever heard.  Razzle, please provide photographic proof of this awesomeness and caption it, “Eatin’ Cereal LIKE A BAWSS”.  **UPDATE** PLEASE FEAST YOUR EYES ON THE BEST PICTURE OF ALL TIME (with captions provided by me):

  • Why is Zac so interested in everyone’s milk preference?  Should we expect to see him in a bunch of “Got Milk” ads in the near future?
  • Busy was so adorable excited about putting Cinnamon Toast Crunch on ice cream!  I love her (and have done so since “Dawson’s Creek” when Audrey arrived in Capeside).
  • Fun Fact: I am so grossed out by milk in cereal.  Like, I was gagging when everyone was talking about drinking the milk out of the bowl after eating the cereal.  For some reason, in my head, I find it very similar to like… backwash in drinks.  GROSS.  GROSS!!!!  I don’t want to talk about it anymore.

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send YOUR favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”!

Personally my favorite heart-throb is only one Nick Carter by Backstreet boys 😉

‘Distinguished and wise’ … I like it! Having reached the grand old age of 40 now, I was feeling sympathy for Dave at some of the comments today!!
Great podcast again – even though it was short, they really packed a lot into it, and the cereal conversation was hilarious – good request Busy, thanks!!!

Teenage heart throb had to be Cindy Crawford. Fave music video is a bloody hard one. So I have 3 Janie’s got a gun by Aerosmith, You could be mine and November rain both by GnR
    That is a tough one

Best cereal I’m British….. We have a fry up. Eggs and bacon

    Great episode as always

1.- Tiffani Amber Thiessen, when she was Kelly in Saved by the Bell <3
2.- I don't watch a lot of music videos but I always liked Walking Contradiction by Green Day
3.- Cocoa Krispies. Because I don't really like milk and all that chocolate masked the milk flavour ^_^

i think there needs to be a new award in the recap: the “who made Zac squirm this week award”. i think it was tyler, when talking about the cougar-crushes, said “i’d crack that shit open”. i don’t think Zac heard as he was trying to go to a break and everyone was kinda talking at once. but if he had, the squirm would have been deafening!

i would be remiss if i did not give a consenting “mmmmm” to the choices of Claire Danes and Phoebe Cates. and of course to the awesomeness that is OK Go’s video. I discovered that little gem a few months ago, and haven’t stopped laughing since! the song’s pretty catchy, too!

thanks, shans, for once again bringing the recap to the comfort of our living rooms/office cubicles!!

Really enjoyed this podcast. Heartthrob(s) past…Shawn Cassidy, Gregory Harrison (Gonzo Gates from Trapper John M.D.), Tom Selleck, David Duchovny and CURRENT, no surprise….Zachary Levi!

Loved this podcast! Heartthrob… Colin Firth. I discovered him when I was 15 and watched Pride and Prejudice for the first time. We’re now ten years down the road, and I still love him, hahah!
Favourite music video was probably Sophie by Goodshirt. I always thought that video was hilarious. I still think it’s hilarious actually.
The cereal question is weird. I didn’t realise people took it so seriously. My favourite is incredibly boring. If I’m eating cereal (which is rare) I like Weetbix with a chopped banana.

Great show, I have listened to all of the podcast so far. They are a great way to get to know stars and to find that they are just normal people with normal lives who just want to share their wonderful talent and give just a tiny insight to the person they are. Thank you for your time and your talent.
