A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 12, 80’s Sly Pixar Games

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast! I’ll be your guide through the topics and choices of this week’s episode, so keep your  hands and legs inside the post at all times, remain seated, and, please, no flash photography. Hang on to your hats and glasses, because this here’s the WILDEST RIDE IN THE WILDERNESS!

(Note: This recap is not “Big Thunder Mountain Railroad”.)

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

This Week’s Guest:

Jason Ritter! (@JasonRitter)

Jason is an Emmy-nominated (Ooo!) actor that has been in tons of TV series and movies.  You might know him best from “Parenthood”, Freddy vs. Jason, “The Event”, or as the voice of Dipper Pines on”Gravity Falls”.  He’ll also be in the Comedy Central series “Another Period” and “Girls” on HBO this year.  And, hey, check out his Vine, too!

“Gravity Falls”

You can watch “Gravity Falls” on Disney XD, or here.

Catch the current season of “Girls” on Sunday nights on HBO, or on HBOGo.

“Another Period” won’t premiere until the summer, but look for it on Comedy Central!

Let’s get into this week’s topics, shall we?

Favorite 80’s Video Game

Remember when you played NES and you got those blisters on your thumb crease from playing too much?  Those were the WORST, right?  But totally worth it, because look how awesome all of these games are! But don’t forget to blow into the cartridge before you start, okay?

The Legend of Zelda

Punchout (Arcade version)

Megaman 2

Extra Mentions:

Buck Rogers and Planet Zoom

Larry Bird vs. Dr. J

“Nintendo Power” Magazine

Ms. Pacman

Dragon Slayer

Pole Position

1942/1943 Franchise

Time Traveler

Favorite Pixar Movie

So I really love this topic, but I had a moral dilemma about posting some sort of picture/video referencing the first ten minutes of Up, since the guys mention it so much.  However, I WOULD NOT PUT ANYONE THROUGH THE EMOTIONAL TRAUMA OF THOSE TEN MINUTES, particularly not the lovely people who take the time to read my recaps.  Seriously, I cried so hard that we had to turn the movie off for a little while so I could collect myself.  So if you haven’t seen Up, go see it, but please be prepared to sob your face right off in the beginning of the movie.

Toy Story

Monsters, Inc.

The Incredibles

Extra Mention:

The Christmas Toy

Tyler’s part in Monsters University (He’s the Council President!)

Pixar Short Films

“Johnny Fedora, Alice Blue Bonnet”

Favorite Sylvester Stallone Movie

Confession: I just went through Sly’s entire film history on IMDB and I have not seen ONE of his movies, though I do remember seeing him on “The Muppet Show”. 1) I feel like this circumstance is a good representation of me, as a person, and 2)  how did that even happen?  Also, why is his nickname “Sly” when it should clearly be “Syl”?  These are the mysteries of life, folks.

Rambo: First Blood

Demolition Man

Rocky 4

Over the Top

Extra Mention:

The Expendables

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • This week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to Jason Ritter for being MAYBE the most adorable person ever, regarding his story about announcing his arrival to his toys when he was kid.  Seriously, I can’t think of anything cuter.  He may as well be a baby elephant.
  • I’m kind of surprised that Brave was Kentucky’s least-liked Pixar movie, since I find that the general consensus about that seems to be that both Cars movies take that title.  Plus, I mean, Emma Thompson is the mom’s voice in Brave and she is an international treasure, so…
  • My heart turned into a tiny rainbow with the Kermit impressions.  I just really love the Muppets (and especially Kermit), okay?
  • I feel like WALL-E doesn’t get the attention that the other Pixar movies do, so I was very glad to see that two of our hosts chose it as their favorite.  How can you not love him?  I don’t understand.
  • Zac: “There used to be some real darkness in animated films…”- SORRY, SIR, BUT YOU DIED FOR A LONG FEW MINUTES IN TANGLED AND I THINK I SCREAMED IN HORROR AT HOW DISNEY COULD DO SUCH A THING TO MY HEART.  “Used to be some darkness”, he says.
  • I can also attest that John Lithgow is awesome because I met him a few years ago and (as I tend to do) made a complete ASS of myself and he was totally gracious about it.  And he is a BRILLIANT comedic actor, apart from his BRILLIANT evil acting skills.
  • When Jason talks about Sylvester Stallone’s muscles ripping out of his flesh, I nearly vomited.  Listen… work out as much as you want, but when your veins are, like, PROTRUDING out of your skin? YUCK.  BARF. STOP.
  • Someone give Razzle a “GD” jar!

I LOVE the mention of Galaga and the 1942/1943 games!! I didn’t do the arcade thing that much, but I did go every now and then, and those were the games I instantly went to.

I have to say, I’m very impressed with the ability of the podcasters to actually come up with a favorite Pixar movie. In my humble opinion, anything they churn out is pure gold. Having said that, I understand the desire for historical accuracy, even when it comes to animated movies (a friend had to talk me off the ledge regarding “Pirates of the Caribbean” by reminding me it was based ON A RIDE!), but his criticism of “Brave” is off the mark. Come on, Kentuckster, I thought we had a thing going! It closer to Celtic Irish accuracy then you think…except the dudes aren’t sleeping with each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celts#Gender_and_sexual_norms

And Stallone? *Yawn* “The Expendables” and “Demolition Man” maybe….

Thanks for the recap, Shannon! See you on the Interwebz!
