Welcome to your weekly recap of the “Picking Favorites” podcast!  Okay, guys, I have to start this week off with a bit of a confession.  Teenaged Me had an ENORMOUS crush on this week’s guest.  Like, the “pictures of his face were plastered all over my bedroom walls” kind of crush.  So I’m fangirling pretty hard right now (seriously, with wiggling fingers and high-pitched noises and everything).  So without further ado…

This Week’s Guest:

Seth Green! (@sethgreen)

While I was introduced to Seth back when he was on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, you may know him from anything on his super long resume of awesome stuff.  He’s done lots of voice work (Chris Griffin on “Family Guy”, Leonardo on the most recent incarnation of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”), movies (“It”, “Can’t Hardly Wait”, the “Austin Powers” movies, “Party Monster”), and TV shows (“Dads” most recently, appearances on “How I Met Your Mother” and “That 70’s Show”).  But what you SHOULD be watching, if you’re not already, is his stop-animation comedy show on Adult Swim, “Robot Chicken”.

Robot Chicken, “Les Miserobble Robble” (you may hear a familiar voice in this clip…)

You can catch Robot Chicken on Adult Swim, late nights on Cartoon Network, or here.  It’s also on Netflix, hooray!

Can’t Hardly Wait

And now, 0ur topics for this bicoastal episode…

Favorite Commercial

Now that we’re creeping closer and closer to the Superbowl, the time of noteworthy commercials is almost upon us.  Granted, with DVR and streaming services now, we don’t get commercials with catchy jingles rammed into our brains so often that we remember them perfectly 20+ years later (see Juicy Fruit, below), but there’s still some good stuff out there that happens to catch our attentions. Also, Super Soaker, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

Seth:

Super Soaker Oozinator

Razzle:

Juicy Fruit

Kentucky:

Dodge – “God Made a Farmer”

Tyler:

Skittles- “Long Beard”

Zac:

Dollar Shave Club- “Our Blades are F***ing Great”

Extra Mention:

Razzle’s Incredible Beard (gratuitously stolen from his Facebook)

razzlebeard

Poptarts – “Low Rider”

Favorite Robot/Android of the Screen

You know, this robot thing is all fun and games,  but when Jibo destroys the human race, I don’t even want to hear any complaining.  (I say this with a tiny shrine to Wall-E in my living room, mind you.  HE’S SO CUTE.)

Seth:

The Great Mazinger, of Shogun Warriors

sethrobot.000

Kentucky:

Vincent from The Black Hole

Tyler:

Robocop, from Robocop

Zac:

Johnny 5, Short Circuit

Razzle:

Voltron

razzlerobot

Extra Mentions:

(WARNING: VERY NSFW.  Also pretty gross and graphic.  Listen, it’s EXACTLY what the title says, folks.  *sigh* Thaaaaanks, Tyler.)

“Robocop Shooting a Bunch of Dicks”

Favorite Animated Movie

I always love topics that give us a wide variety of choices from the guys, and this one really delivered.  However, I must pass on the warning that I’ve received from multiple sources that, apparently, The Iron Giant will make you cry your face right off (which is why I haven’t watched it yet).  Can we all agree that Robin William’s Genie is the best animated character of all time, ever?  Let’s do that.

Seth:

The Iron Giant

Tyler:

Secret of NIMH

Zac:

Aladdin

Razzle:

An American Tail

Kentucky:

Akira

Extra Mentions:

Tangled

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • “Fruit Leather”?  “FRUIT”?  “LEATHER”?!?! Is this what they call Fruit Rollups in Canada?? Blecchh.
  • The winner of this week’s “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to Seth Green, because fifteen-year-old me is SCREECHING.  Also, his story about buying his wife, Clare, a super-rare metal Voltron was really cute and close to my heart (seriously, I gave my husband an old school TMNT Pizza Thrower for our anniversary last week).
  • The guys’ cover of “Juicy Fruit” will be released on iTunes next week… totally kidding, but they were a little too good at that impromptu song.  Have they been secretly starting a barbershop quartet (well, quintet with Seth) between recording podcasts? The world needs to know.
  • I laughed really hard at Zac and Kentucky’s apology for Tyler’s YouTube suggestion because, while that’s really sweet, I’ve lived with a guy for nine years now.  I have survived many months of his utter delight at tricking people (namely me) into watching the latest grossly funny video he found on the internet.  I’ll be just fine.
  • Zac was so desperate to move on from the Oozinator discussion.  SO. DESPERATE.  But did anyone notice that they literally end the commercial by saying “major pumping required”?!  I laughed ’til I cried.
  • Who doesn’t like Lucky Charms marshmallows???!
  • Zac mentioned that he was in New York filming a guest spot on “Deadbeat”, Tyler’s show on Hulu.  If you haven’t heard, Zac is playing Abraham Lincoln, which is GLORIOUS because when they put the stove-pipe hat on him, he’ll be exactly a bajillion feet tall.

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send your favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”.

As always, I like to start my comments with a nod to the Royal Recapper. The image in my head I had based on her description of the “wiggling fingers and high-pitched noises” fangirling had me weeping with laughter. (A rather accurate description of me when I was mentioned in Shannon’s blog…but I digress. Moving on…!)

Completely nothing to do with the choices of our podcasters, but a comment made in the very beginning: the 80’s were the decade of my teenage years (pretty amazing when you consider I’m only 25…ahem…), and I can say with absolute certainty powdered milk was NOT a thing in the 80’s. The 50’s, maybe, but I wasn’t alive then, so I don’t know….but definitely NOT the 80’s. That shit is nasty….

I’m not keeping count, but perhaps I should, but Kentucky and I are almost spot on when it comes to likes and dislikes. Well, maybe that’s stretching it, but I find I relate most to his choices than anyone else’s. In this case, it’s the truck commercial.

I also noticed Zac was trying to get away from the Oozinator comments. I could almost hear him squirming…not that I blame him.

Lastly, I completely concur with Shannon regarding the Lucky Charms marshmallows. I used to eat my way around the “healthy” bits to get to the marshmallows. Which was pretty difficult, considering we were evidently all eating powdered milk…sheesh *rolls eyes*

Go to YouTube and check out the “Oozinator – Staff Meeting: Funny” video. It always boggles my mind when companies (especially toy companies) come out with products like this….was there NO ONE on the production team or in a focus group who spoke up about how awful this product (and commercial) was, haha??!?
