A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 10, New Year’s Food Books

By Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Hello and happy new year, “Picking Favorites” fans!  Glad to see that you’ve survived your New Year’s hangovers and far-too-soon breaking of your resolutions.  But fear not! This is a judgement-free zone.  Let’s hug it out, and recap the latest episode!

You can find this week’s episode on iTunes or Soundcloud.

This Week’s Special Guest:

Tricia Helfer! (@trutriciahelfer)

Tricia is best known for her role as “Number Six” in “Battlestar Galactica”, but you may also know her from “Chuck” (Agent Alex Forrest), “Supernatural” (Molly McNamara), “Burn Notice” (Carla), and, most recently, “Ascension” on Syfy (Viondra Denniger).  She’s also done lots of voice work for animated series, movies, and video games.  Also, she’s gorgeous and wonderful and rides motorcycles like the kick-ass lady she is.

You can check out “Ascension” on Syfy, or watching streaming episodes here.

You can visit “Acting Outlaws” here, but more importantly, BUY THE 2015 CALENDAR HERE!

Favorite Food

I’m so GLAD that this was a topic this week, now that all of us have gone on diets and healthier-eating sprees for the new year.  Sigh. Sure, a good amount of the choices are on the healthier side, but then they mentioned peanut butter which made me think of Reese’s and now I’m just really sad about how we live in a world where we cannot eat pounds upon pounds of peanut butter cups without repercussions.  Good-bye, chocolate and peanut butter; I knew thee well.

Greens/Salad (specifically, butter lettuce salad with tarragon, chives, and red wine vinaigrette)

Pizza (specifically from Little Caesar’s)

Fried Chicken (specifically from Jacques-Imo’s in New Orleans)

Salmon Sashimi

Extra Mentions:

Crab Cake Eggs Benedict (Tricia)

Ceviche Tostada (Tyler)

Kentucky Fried Chicken (Kentucky and Zac)

Banh Mi sandwich (Tyler)

Tacos (Zac)

Sea Urchin/Uni (Tyler)

Peanut Butter and Jelly (Everybody Except Tricia)

Garage Pizza (Razzle)

Pizzeria Mozza (Razzle)

Joe Peep’s Pizza (Kentucky/David)

Patton Oswalt’s bit on Kentucky Fried Chicken (Razzle):

Favorite Book

Reading is fundamental, guys, but you know what?  Reading is also just FUN.  Seriously- take a look.  It’s in a book.  A READING RAINBOOOOWWW!  Best. Show. Ever.  Sidenote: I was shocked that no graphic novels were chosen here, but I suppose we sort of covered that last week, right?

The First Stone,  by John Briley

The Heartsick Series, by Chelsea Cain

Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline

The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band, by Motley Crue

Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World, by Hiruki Murakami

Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley

The Dramatic Imagination, by Robert Edmond Jones

Extra Mentions:

The Encyclopedia Brown series, by Donald J. Sobol

Favorite New Year’s Eve Experience

In case you’re wondering, the thing that Zac mentioned about people being in diapers to get good spots in Times Square for the New Year’s ball drop is TOTALLY true; once they let you into the gated area, you are STUCK there until after midnight.  GROSS.  My advice? Wait until you can afford to splurge on a Times-Square-View hotel room or dinner reservation, and enjoy the festivities warm and able to use a bathroom when needed.  Or, you know, be a famous actor, like Zac.

Extra Mentions:

Saturday Night Live skit, “Oops I Crapped My Pants”

Update from “Favorite Holiday Tradition!

As Razzle mentioned in the podcast, he wanted to make an amendment to his choice for “Favorite Holiday Tradition”, which was a topic back on Episode 6 (with Nathan Fillion).  So, along with adding his “holiday sweater vest” tradition with his brother and cousin to his choices, he also provided a picture:

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • As Tyler mentioned, you can download the “Picking Favorites” theme song (or, “Espionage”, which is the actual title) on his Soundcloud page, here.
  • This week, the esteemed “Hey, You’re Awesome” Award goes to… Kentucky! Because he was the only one who wanted grape jelly on his PB & J sandwich, as it SHOULD be.  Like, STRAWBERRY JAM?  Listen, Tricia gets a pass because she doesn’t know better, but the rest of you guys should be ASHAMED of yourselves. (Apparently, I have strong opinions about peanut butter and jelly.)
  • Razzle IS actually 8 years old, because he does that adorable thing that kids do when they’re excited about something and they have to take a lot of deep breaths when they tell you about it.  Awww.  Taylor Swift, date him.
  • But speaking of Razzle, I almost created a new weekly award from his choices of favorite pizza place: the “Oh, Honey, No” Award.  Because LITTLE CAESAR’S?? Oh, honey, no.
  • Doesn’t Tricia have the most pleasant voice?  I feel like she could hypnotize me into liking salad.
  • I think this was the first episode where no one suggested that we all watch Edge of Tomorrow.  So… instead, go watch Spiral.  It’s NUTS, but good nuts.

That’s it for this week’s recap!  Remember to subscribe to and rate the podcast on iTunes, and send your favorites to @thenerdmachine on Twitter with the hashtag “#PickingFavorites”, because who knows?  Maybe the guys will mention YOUR choice on a future episode!  You can also find our hosts all over social media:

Thanks for reading! See you next week, and remember: DON’T DO DRUGS!

I like the “oh honey, no” idea – maybe not as a weekly ‘award’ but just on special occasions that truly warrant it 🙂

Thanks again ShAnnon for a great summary!

I’m right there with Zach on the salmon sushi, that was the fish that got me hooked (no pun intended) to sushi. Also, nice pull with the street tacos. I think Zach needs to hire a taco guy for his next event at, well, anywhere. MMmmmmmmm…… unlimited tacos for 3 hours…

i find it funny that i listened to this episode right after coming home from my friend’s house, where we talked about nothing but food 😀 great ep, as always! i love “brave new world” too, so +1, zac 😉 thanks for the recap, shannon :3

I really liked this podcast, primarily because it brought me back from the edge the last cast led me to. And one of the main reasons is the reaction to Razzle’s comment on Little Caesar’s pizza. Almost had coffee out the nose both times (yes, I rewound and listened to it again. Don’t judge…)

And before I go any further, a HUGE shout out of support to Tricia and her choice of motorcycles, in particular the BMW. I have owned several, and can tell you, those Germans can make engines like no other. You could shoot bullets in them, and they keep on keepin’ on…

Once again, Kentucky comes through in picking the best of the best; fried chicken, baby! I’ve not tried Jacques-Imo’s, but as a huge fan of the deep-fried bird, I am putting it on my bucket list. (Mr. Kentucky, as a fellow fried-chicken aficionado, should you ever find yourself in the city of San Francisco, you simply MUST try the salt-and-pepper chicken wings and D & A Cafe in inner RIchmond- the district, not the city of Richmond in East Bay….)

A suggestion from one who has had PB&J for longer than most of you have been alive; apple jelly. It’s hard to find these days, I don’t know why, but it’s dee-lish….

And thank you, Shannon, for putting together yet another great recap!

    My favorites are:
    – Book: Cryptonomicon
    – Food: Also sushi. Specially, in this order, Ikura, Toro and Uni
    – NYE Moment: my trip to NYC was really good

Also I agree Tricia has the most pleasant voice. Mass Effect fans like myself have known this for a while because she was EDI in those games 😀
