A Fan’s Guide to “Picking Favorites”: Episode 1, The Russian in This Discussion

By: Shannon Fox, @shannonfox

Hi, fellow nerds! This is a review/recap/explanation of The Nerd Machine’s new podcast, “Picking Favorites”, hosted by Razzle Dangerously, David Coleman, Tyler Labine, and Zachary Levi.

For those of you who don’t know about it, “Picking Favorites” is a podcast on the Wolfpop Network where the guys literally just sit and talk about their favorite stuff. You can download it on iTunes here or listen on Soundcloud here.

Since “Picking Favorites” is a podcast about pop culture with a potentially large audience with many different age brackets, cultural and geological upbringings, and plain ol’ different interests, I thought I’d start a sort of guide to the references made on the podcast, so that no one misses out on the fun and we can all join in on the conversations with the guys.

A short introduction to our hosts:

Razzle Dangerously– stand-up comedian, bestknown for the “Today We Learned” Nerdist Podcast

David Coleman– Co-founder of The Nerd Machine, propmaster on Chuck, and apparently worked at McDonald’s for 17 years.

Tyler Labine– actor, best known for ReaperTucker & Dale Vs. Evil, and Deadbeat (now on Hulu).

Zachary Levi– Our Nerd Leader and actor, best known for ChuckTangled, and Thor: The Dark World.

Now, onto the show!

Topic #1 – First Cars

I know absolutely ZILCH about cars.  Like, I was so excited to sell my car when I moved to New York City, you don’t even understand.  But I think everyone has a special place in their hearts for their first car, even me (RIP, my beloved ’87 Chevy Chevette named Betsy), so let’s take a look at everyone’s first cars!

Note: Pictures are not mine or TNM’s!

’87 Buick Skylark

’86 Chrysler Lazer

’85 Chrysler Fifth Avenue

’78 MG Midget

Topic #2 – Favorite Cartoons

Aahh- the good stuff.  We’ve all pretty much come from generations that recognized the television as our primary babysitter, so choosing a favorite cartoon would be difficult for anybody! To be honest, I was shocked that G.I. Joe and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were barely mentioned, but since Razzle is the youngest and he’s still got two years on me, I think it might be an age difference thing.  That being said, I agreed with HIS choices the most- the Disney Afternoon block of shows was basically my ENTIRE CHILDHOOD.  And though I was fonder of She-Ra/Princess Power, I totally had the “Beating Heart” He-Man action figure. I HAAAVE THE PPOOOOWEERR!!! (If anyone else watches He-Man/She-Ra Christmas Special every year, we are now best friends.)

He-Man & The Masters of the Universe

Battle of the Planets

Green Forest

Also Mentioned:

Darkwing Duck

The Centurions

Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors

Topic #3 – Time-Travel Movies

Classic movies are a difficult subject for me, because my mom was super-strict when I was little and basically limited my film viewing to Disney animated movies ONLY.  For example? I’ve only seen Terminator, Groundhog Day AND Back to the Future for the FIRST TIME this past year.  Still, I liked all of them and can appreciate their places in the Time-Travel Hall of Fame.  Also, apparently, we all need to go watch Edge of Tomorrow.

Extra Mention:

Edge of Tomorrow

Random Notes from Shannon’s Brain

  • For the Zachary Levi fangirls- Zac sings “Razzle Dazzle” from Chicago for .2 seconds, which poor Razzle must get from everyone he ever meets. Ever.
  • “Cards Against Humanity” was the sponsor this week, which is pretty effing awesome because it’s the most hilarious and fun game EVER and you can buy it here
  • Can Zac as Marty McFly happen at LEAST in a photoshoot or something, if it hasn’t already? Also, does anyone else remember that bogus ad campaign that came out WITH Christopher Lloyd a couple of years ago about hoverboards finally happening? I’m still angry.
  • The whole “guys play with their business when nervous” thing- is this a thing that happens? I’ve been friends with dudes my whole life and LIVE with one now and never noticed this, though I’m not known for being particularly observant.  I’m consulting with the hubs tomorrow- I’ll get back to you on this one.  Men, fill us in on this, because I can tell you that we’re not fiddling with OUR hoo-ha’s when we’re anxious. At least I don’t. (No judgment, though.)
  • So I went on the Terminator RIDE at Universal Orlando before I saw the movie and was so confused, but super-psyched about Mama Bartowski being around. So there’s that.

And that’s it for this week’s guide!  Remember to tweet The Nerd Machine (@thenerdmachine), David (@kentuckysocal), Tyler (@TyLabine), Zac (@ZacharyLevi), and Razzle (@MyNameIsRazzle2) with the hashtag #PickingFavorites and give them your favorite cartoon or time-travel movie.  Also, don’t forget to subscribe to and rate the podcast, too!

Feel free to continue the conversation in the comments of this post!

Until next time…

The entire time they were talking about “Mask” I thought they were talking about the “Mask” cartoon based on the Jim Carrey movie. This makes so much more sense. Thanks, Shannon!
