3D Printing Nerd: Upgrading to an All Metal Hot End

By Joel Telling, @joeltelling

Most 3D printers come with a hot end that utilizes a PTFE (teflon) tube inside the hot end to help pass the filament through. This tube works well, but does break down over time.

One option is to replace the tube when it’s worn down. The other option is to replace the hot end with an entirely new all metal hot end. This means you can print at a higher temperature without the worry of burning up the tube. Plus, it takes one part out of the equation if anything ever goes wrong and you need to start troubleshooting.

In this video, I swap out the hot end on the Wanhao Duplicator i3 with an all metal hot end replacement kit from Micro Swiss.

As always, #highfive!
